History

Meet the team:

Mrs H Cornwall – Faculty Director of Social Sciences

Completed a history degree at Birmingham University and decided to extend my passion for history into teaching in 2006.  Began at Cannock Chase High School as a NQT history teacher.  In 2nd year of teaching was promoted to head of KS3 history. In 2010 promoted again to the role of head of house.  After 5 years of developing experience as a pastoral leader I decided to go back to my first love and was appointed as Head of Humanities at Great Wyrley beginning September 2015.

Mrs K Broadwood – Curriculum Lead of History

After a PGCE completed at Bangor University began a long teaching career in 1989 in the Winton School in Hampshire, moved back to Northamptonshire in 1991 and taught in a variety of schools including Guilsborough School and Northampton School for Boys both of which were graded as outstanding schools by OFSTED.  Became a head of department in 1997 before moving to Staffordshire for family reasons in 2003.  Began as a teacher of History at Great Wyrley then progressed to Citizenship coordinator, 2nd in the Humanities Faculty and enjoys the current role of Lead Teacher in History and EA coordinator.

Key information to note:

The new 9-1 GCSE History course followed by the current Y11 students is OCR History B Schools History Project comprising of the units:  the People’s Health, the Norman Conquest, History Around Us, Living Under Nazi Rule, the Making of the USA.

From September 2017 the department made the decision to transfer to the Edexcel GCSE history course 1HI0 comprising of the units:  Medicine in Britain c.1000-present and the British Sector of the Western Front, Anglo-Saxon & Norman England, the American West 1835-95, Weimar and Nazi Germany.

KS3 students are following the Edexcel KS3 pathway course to better prepare them for their History GCSE examination.

It is intended to offer an A level in history from September 2018 – units are still being reviewed and considered at the time of writing.

Students are taught in broadly mixed ability groups throughout KS3 and KS4.
