The Excellence Academy programme is well into its first year now and has been a hugely successful addition to the KS3 experience of the selected Y7 and Y8 students that are participating in the weekly sessions. Selection is largely but not exclusively based upon KS2 SATS results and the CATs testing that was carried out during the autumn term of the current academic year.
The aim of the EA is to enrich and develop the aspirations of our most able students to better equip them to be well placed to apply to top level university courses and academic apprenticeship schemes. Consequently while the school reserves the right to select by ability those students eligible to participate there are opportunities for teacher, parent and student nominations to be considered for the programme. We expect the selected students to demonstrate the very best learning habits within the classroom on a daily basis and to be models of excellence in all that they do at school. They are being nurtured to develop leadership roles within the school community and further afield.
We believe that participation in the programme will enable our students to enjoy the experiences of students at more selective educational establishments in addition to a more conspicuous monitoring of their attainment at the highest levels by the coordinator assisted by heads of department and subject staff. We aspire for them to aim for Russell Group University or similar application in the sixth form and we wish to facilitate the experiences they need earlier on to be able to compete successfully in this highly selective and competitive market.
The aim of the taught programme is to extend the school day into areas that may be linked to and therefore enhance the existing curriculum but also to enrich and add an extra dimension to it. Some sessions are delivered by school staff who have a particular interest or expertise in a topic, other sessions are delivered by external experts and yet more will involve visits and trips to exciting and top level venues and establishments. Take a look through the programme for Y7 to see the wide ranging opportunities and experiences that have been enjoyed to date. We look forward to building upon and developing these opportunities in forthcoming years.
